There are abundance aspects of human daily life that utilize the science of chemistry, from health issues to culinary issues. Therefore, chemistry is very important to be learned for its positive benefits in human daily life. For example, the usage of the science of chemistry in the test of borax or formalin content in food by using natural ingredient such as turmeric. This great benefits of chemistry has inspired Pudak Scientific to held the “Workshop of the Experiments of Chemistry Applications in Daily Life” on April 16, 2016 at Pudak Training Center , Gedebage, Bandung and was attended by forty eight participants from West java, Banten, Central Java, DKI Jakarta, and other regions of Indonesia.

The main speaker for this workshop was Drs. Asep Suryatna, M.Si., who conveyed about the fundamentals of chemistry application. He advised to not afraid of chemical substances because when it uses correctly it is safe, including the one contained in some food.

He also led one of the experiments conducted. It was the test of borax and formalin content in food. This experiment found that most sample foods contained borax or formalin. The sample food included meatball, tofu, and noodles. This result reminded to always careful in choosing food to avoid food that contained harmful substances. 

There are other experiments conducted beside the borax and formalin test that included:

• Liquid soap making
• Bar soap making
• Ice cream making

Participants were also assigned with independent assignment to make mayonnaise. Participants were very satisfied in attending this workshop; they said that they found many new things related to chemistry in their daily life events. One participant was in fact inspired to open soap making business. We wish our workshop will not only have contribution in improving teachers’ competence and Indonesian education quality, but also give inspiration.
