Science laboratory is a workplace especially designed for scientific research. If the science laboratory is not maintained properly, it will result in a not optimized student experiments, ruined equipment and materials, and the dysfunctional of laboratory administration.
Teachers or laboratory assistants are demanded to be able to manage the school’s science laboratory, thus the science equipment owned by the school will not wasteful. However, in the field, wasteful science laboratory equipment and materials is common, which are ruined because those equipment and material are unused. For example, the moldy microscope, rusty metal equipment, or ruined charts (the visual aids) because they are neglected in the warehouse.
Pudak Scientific, as the biggest educational laboratory equipment producer in Indonesia, has been held the science laboratory management training for teachers and laboratory assistance since 2009. Many teachers and laboratory assistants from all over Indonesia had participated in this training. On early November, last Saturday (1/11), in Pudak Training Center, Gedebage, the Pudak Scientific Training Division held another science laboratory management training which participated by teachers and laboratory assistants from schools in West Java, DKI Jakarta, and Banten. Dr.Hj. Yunita, M.Pd was the guest speaker of this training. She is the lecturer of Chemistry Education Department of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, who have many experiences in arranging science laboratory in all over Indonesia since 2005 as the facilitator of the Ministry of Education.
Through this training, participants were expected to:
- Understand the laboratory organization
- Understand the basics of laboratory buildings and the proper contents of laboratory
- Understand the basic equipment maintenance and care
- Understand the laboratory administration
- Understand the laboratory safety procedure
- Exploring the basic equipment of physics, chemistry, and biology (chemistry basic technique, electrical basic measurement, mechanical basic measurement, physic equipment assembly, microscope usage technique, preparation making, respirometer usage)
According to Dr. Yunitha, even though laboratory assistant is not available in school, teachers are expected to be the initiator to manage a better laboratory and become the manager of the science laboratory by encouraging students to come to laboratory and straighten up the laboratory, to make it more friendly for students.
Teachers and laboratory assistants participated in this training said that they learned a lot, about the science laboratory management or equipment usage. This training ended at 5 PM, however, most participants were still enthusiastic in exploring equipment.
The next training will be the “Training of Physics Practice in Optical Concept in School” that will be held on November 8, 2014. The speaker for this training will be Drs. Janto V Sulungbudi. (
